Each of
us like to think that we are smart, or strong, or this or that, but regardless
of how true that is none of us are capable of surviving a day in this world
without the Lord’s help. In driving to
work today, I could easily have been killed by being in the wrong place at the
wrong time, or if someone else had been in the wrong place at the wrong time. No amount of intelligence or talent or
capacity could have saved me.
When we
are proud of our abilities or characteristics, we are left to the success we
can generate with those abilities and characteristics. At best what we generate, under those
circumstances, are toxic imitations of positive things. At worst, we find ourselves immediately
flailing and facing our own destruction.
We have
to rely on the Lord – there is no other valid choice that we can make. Unfortunately, it is difficult for each of us
to remember that when our pride rears its ugly head.
