There
are few scriptures in the Standard Works more frightening than the simple
phrase that as many as hearkened fell away. If you have been reading these for a while,
you know that I am always struck by absolutist language (perhaps more so than I
should be) and this has some frightening absolutist language. If we hearken to the crowd – even a little bit
– well it would appear that our inevitable course is to fall away. We need to bring ourselves to be capable of
completely ignoring the world and the scoffs and the scorn or else we will
(subtly at first) amend the doctrine in ways that make it more palatable to the
modern sensibility until it leads to our destruction.
