The
language of these chapters was interesting, because it seemed to show that two
things were keeping us from God – both our individual and our societal
iniquities. I can understand our individual
iniquities separating us from God, but society iniquities dividing us from God was
an altogether different issue. But as I
thought about it, I realized that the Lord tends to work across cultures and groups
of people and not just individuals. When
a society becomes rotten, there are fewer and fewer people capable of finding
the Lord in that set of circumstances. So
even if judgments are made at the individual level, a society’s iniquities can
keep many people from God.
