We don’t
often think of shame as a virtue. But it
seems clear that being ashamed is a virtue, based upon the clear words of this
chapter. This is an issue that is
important to deal with, considering that we are approaching a point where we
have almost completely lost our sense of shame.
That
being said, there is productive and unproductive shame. Some shame draws us back to the Lord – we see
ourselves as the unworthy and fallen creatures we are and we turn to Him to
give us strength and to heal us. Other
shame (the same word but a different concept) causes us to isolate ourselves –
as Satan said, this shame is nothing more than him telling us ‘quick, hide!’
