I
wonder what would have happened if Zeniff (or Limhi) would have been king
during this crucial time. Limhi and his
people stood against the Lamanites successfully (albeit temporarily) even after
they had suffered so many losses. Could
Limhi (or Gideon) have brought the
people victory? It is hard to say, of
course, but it seems likely.
With
that in mind, we can see the dire consequences of unrighteous rulers. While it is easy to say that the unrighteous behavior
of our rulers doesn’t directly affect us (or our eternal reward), this very
unrighteousness can lead to drastic consequences that can be painful. Though the Lord can bend even these to our
benefit, it doesn’t negate the fact that these consequences exist.
