Preaching
destruction has a unique power to keep people from sin, but it is somewhat
less-effective in many ways. When you
preach destruction as a consequence of sin, you keep someone’s focus solely on
themselves – they are thinking about not wanting to be destroyed. While focused in that way, they are not
focused on the glory of God or love for their fellow men. It is a useful tool if it is the only thing
keeping us (or others) from sinning, but only to allow us to remain worthy of
the Spirit so that we can be taught the better and more important reasons for
obedience. Sadly, we often get ourselves
mired in this worldview and never progress beyond it.
