There
is something to be said about Jeremiah prophesying against Babylon at the height of the Babylonian
Empire’s prosperity. Babylon
undoubtedly (especially to the Children of Israel ) seemed to be mighty and
beyond the capacity of any nation on Earth to destroy. Now, of course, Babylon
is a footnote – one that would have been almost completely forgotten but for
her interactions with Israel .
So too
in our modern society – it may appear that sin is ascendant, and will remain so
entrenched in perpetuity. But just as
Jeremiah foresaw the destruction of Babylon ,
our prophets have foreseen the destruction of sin and the blessings in store
for the righteous. Even if we cannot see
a way for society to recover from the damages inflicted on it by sin, or even
if we cannot see a way for us to recover from the damages we have inflicted on
ourselves through our sins, the Lord has promised each Child of Israel (including
us) deliverance from their own Babylonian Captivity.
